Thy Primordial

The History...

Thy Primordial was formed in 1994 and short there after the birth the band entered the studio to record the first demo. The debut demo "De Mörka Makters Alla" was released in March 1995. Soon after its release, a one album agreement was reached with Gothic Records (US). The album "Under iskall Trollmåne" was conceived and scheduled for release in February 1996. Even though the album was delayed for years Thy Primordial continued their musical pursuits with stronger conviction and focus.
Not to satisfide with the current label Thy Primordial recorded a promotional tape called "Svart Gryning" during the winter 95 - 96, in order to establish a better deal. It gained interest from several labels and a contractual agreement was eventually established with Pulverised Records in July 1996. Meanwhile interest from Paranoia Syndrome Production reached the band. To promote the band they entered the studio and recorded 4 new songs for them which was further released as a 7" EP in August 1996 by Paranoia Syndrome.
Determined to record their second -debut- album Thy Primordial entered the studio in September the same year. Laid on tape was the "Where Only The Seasons Mark The Paths Of Time" album. This time professionally recorded at Rolab Music Studio, Sweden. Ensuring a release of the highest quality, this CD was further re-mastered with state of the art 20 Bit CD mastering technology. Making it the first ever underground release to benefit from 20 Bit technology.
10 tracks of hellish belligerent Black Metal played with uncompromising technicality and melody released in full color jewel case format.
After the recording of the well responsed album "Where Only the Seasons Mark the Paths of Time" Thy Primordial started to work on new material for their next strike to come. The material turned out to be even more intensive and harsh yet with the sense of combining the extreme with charged atmosphere and melody. One year past and in august 1997 it was time to yet again enter the studio dungeons, this time around, at Sunlight Studio, Stockholm, Sweden. Alongside with Fred Estby and Tomas Skogsberg, Thy Primordial recorded full-length number three "At the World of Untrodden Wonder" which then surely was their most hellish material shown to public.

The long delayed as well as awaited "Under iskall trollmane" album was released by Gothic Records in August -98. The release of this album came as a surprise for both the band and the current label. Though, as this production came out fairly late it filled its purpose as the actual debut album, both in the discography as in the confused scene. Due to this release Pulverised decided to put "At the World of Untrodden Wonder" on ice for awhile, to avoid misunderstandings from the metal scene. Beside the release of this forgotten album, Thy Primordial worked hard on material for further actions of the band, more focused than ever before.
"At The world of Untrodden Wonder" was released in April -99, an all out professional release with 18 page booklet, jewel case and of course the skills of the band. Alongside also the T-shirt/Longsleeve "To Ruin and Decay" was released.
Still Thy Primordial kept working on new material for the upcoming release. Finally in August -99 they once again entered Sunlight studio. This time to record the album entitled "The Heresy of an Age of Reason". 5 weeks was spent to record the 8 new songs and spawned was the, without doubts, strongest Thy Primordial material made yet. With a heavier production and a much more worked through song structure the band once again improved their strength and their hellish musical attributes. The recording was mastered at Polar Studios before the delivery to Pulverised records and furthermore this production contains professionally executed layout and so forth, all in all a carefully prepared release. The preperation for the release of "The heresy of an age of reason" started in April. And Finally, in the end of june the album saw the dark of the night. After the release of "The Heresy of an Age of reason" The band faced the first line- up change since the start. N. Nilsson decided to leave the band.
The Release of "The Heresy of an age of reason" also meant that the three album agreement with Pulverised was fulfilled. Promotional package was then sent to labels world wide and a handful of offers returned. In the end there was two labels to chose between. In August -00 Thy Primordial declaired that the band signed up for two albums on Blackend/PHD (UK) Meanwhile the band created songs for yet another album. After a year of hard work, new material and studio booked there was yet again a new album to be put on tape, "The Crowning Carnage"
This time entering Abyss Studios, Sweden with Tommy Tägtgren as engineer. Nine new songs was recorded during a two week period in August -01, later mastered at Turna Audio, UK. This album follow the old patterns but does also show a more technical and varried side of the band never shown before. In March -02 the ultra controlled black/death metal release "The Crowning Carnage" was laid upon the earth through Blackend / Plastic Head Records. And heads were severed...
With almost ten years behind, the band still kept working but things change. The bond between vocalist Isidor and the other members began to untie. So in early 2003 Thy Primordial took the hard decision to walk separate ways with Isidor due to a lack of interest etc. A permanent replacement was found at the same time and Nicke Holstenson (former vocalist of Swedish deathsters Nominon) was put to place in the line-up. A pre-production was recorded with fresh material and changes were made, determined to set a new standard within the band they once again booked Abyss Studios and producer T. Tägtgren. This time in two different sessions, first out drum recordings in june then followed up with all the rest in August -03. And this recording is an improvement by all means, a trademark of the past decade shown through "Pestilence upon Mankind"...

The band broke up in 2005.

Total Negation

It seems most quality German Depressive Black metal that comes out these days is released by Temple Of Torturous. From China. Go figure. Anyway, Temple Of Torturous regularly releases quality misanthropic Black metal upon mankind and recent times saw another batch of releases by them. First off, Total Negation's.

It's easy to dismiss Total Negation, fuelled by sole member Wiedergaenger, as another generic Depressive Black metal act upon first listen, but subsequent plays reveal that there's more to this band than just misanthropy and black screechy fuzz. In fact, the music hops from fast raging Black metal to slow, hateful Depressive Black metal with ditto vocals and occasionally falls into a pit of dissonance with psychedelic touches and 'spaced out' production. It makes me wonder why they didn't give sounds such as the 'shifting riffs' in the background during the title track (0:45 - 0:50) a more prominent role in the songs. Most of their songs contain a few very awesome moments (great leads, the aforementioned riffs, bursts of beautiful spacey dissonance and such) but fail to impress when you 'zoom out'. You just really have to search for the good stuff, here.

It's a shame the band chose raw Black metal as main theme of the music. If he would have focused more on the spacious brain-damaging riff that they display every now and then, he would surely have come across as a whole lot better and more unique.

Thy Serpent

Thy Serpent started as Sami Tenetz’s one-man project back in 1993. During these first years Sami made two demos, "Frozen Memory" in 1994 and "Into Everlasting Fire" in 1995.

With the help of the second demo, Thy Serpent was signed to the Finnish record company Spinefarm Records. After the deal was signed, Sami began to find suitable musicians to fulfill the lineup. For the recordings of their first album, the lineup consisted of Sami Tenetz (guitar), Luopio (bass), Azhemin (synth & vocals) and Agathon (drums). "Forests of Witchery" was then recorded during the summer of 1996 at Tico-Tico Studios.

During the same studio session, the band also did some re-recordings of old demo songs, which were later released as the "Lords of Twilight" MCD in 1997.

A year after "Lords of Twilight" was released, Thy Serpent decided once again to use the Tico-Tico Studio to record a new album, later named as "Christcrusher". At that time, Luopio wasn’t a part of Thy Serpent anymore due to his decision to end his involvement with the metal-scene in the end of 1997, so Azhemin had to take the bass guitar for himself..

After "Christcrusher", Thy Serpent made a small tour in Finland with Barathrum, and those eight gigs remain as the only live appearances until this day, and whether there’s going to be more or not, only time will tell…

A while after those gigs Thy Serpent decided to take in some fresh air. The drummer was changed, and a second guitarist was taken in. The new guys also have other projects going on: the new drummer Teemu Laitinen also plays in the melodic death metal band Throne of Chaos, and guitarist Tomi Ullgren is also taking place in Rapture.

In the spring of 2000 Thy Serpent went into a new studio with the new lineup and recorded a new MCD simply called "Death". This time the studio was Studio Walltone in Savonlinna. Changing the studio proved to be a very wise choice, judging by the great amount of new dimensions that the music took in...

Hollenthon

The beginnings of HOLLENTHON date back to 1994, a time of an active Austrian Black Metal Syndicate and an incognito project known as VUZEM. At the urging of A.B.M.S. members, vocalist, guitarist, and composer Martin Schirenc anonymously included two VUZEM tracks ("Invocation” and "Von Denen Vampyren”) on the self-produced compilation Norici Obscura Pars.
Following favorable reviews and multiple requests, Schirenc decided to release a full-length recording of VUZEM's music. Other commitments, however, delayed the realization of this endeavor until late 1998, when unfinished material was brought to the attention of Napalm Records. Shortly thereafter, VUZEM signed to the label, releasing the critically acclaimed debut "Domus Mundi" in 1999 under the HOLLENTHON banner.

In June 2001, HOLLENTHON released "With Vilest of Worms to Dwell". Not unlike its predecessor, it boasts of a superb soundtrack-like production, as well as a fierce and wicked atmosphere created by a perfect symbiosis of heavy guitars, symphonic interludes, thrilling choirs, and bewitching melodies.

Not long after the release of the album, HOLLENTHON embarked on a European tour with EISREGEN and SIEBENBÜRGEN. The line-up that since the days of Domus Mundi already included drummer Mike Gröger was completed by bassist Mario Klausner and guitarist Werner Freinbichler. This line-up also went on to perform at various festivals including Wacken Open Air, Summer Breeze, and Brutal Assault, to name but a few.

Although enjoying much success with HOLLENTHON, Schirenc turned his attention to the newly reformed PUNGENT STENCH and while he continued to write new material, it would be some time before HOLLENTHON released a follow-up. Yet in early 2008, the recording of Opus Magnum was finally completed, and following the split of PUNGENT STENCH, Schirenc also took the opportunity to choose a permanent line-up for HOLLENTHON, recruiting Gregor Marboe, who had also delivered "pungent” bass lines since 2006, and guitarist Martin Arzberger.
Though it’s been seven years since "With Vilest of Worms to Dwell" left the music world in awe, the hordes revolving around mastermind Martin Schirenc have returned with a resounding thunderclap. "Opus Magnum" does more than justice to its title, delivering a masterpiece of epic proportions. Darker than ever before and heavier than its predecessor, the album seamlessly combines the passion found in classical music with exotic, ethnic melodies, and the brutal energy of metal. Like no other, HOLLENTHON succeeds in effortlessly creating a perfect symbiosis of these diverse styles, thus capturing the listener with the sound of the very first note and refusing to ever let go.HOLLENTHON’s "Opus Magnum" is available via Napalm Records since 30 May 2008 as a regular jewel case and as a limited edition digipack including bonus track and video clip. The band took to the stage at various summer festivals including Graspop, Waldrock, Kaltenbach Open Air and Brutal Assault, followed by a full-fledged European tour in the fall with TYR, ALESTORM, SVARTSOT and GWYDION.
At the moment, HOLLENTHON are working on a new EP, which will be released as limited edition at their European tour with GOD DETHRONED and ENDSTILLE in autumn 2009.
